Catholic Hospitals & Catholic Charities Object to Illinois FOCA “In Total,” Calling it “Misleading”

The Illinois Catholic Health Association, the Catholic Charities agencies in each of the dioceses of Illinois, and the Catholic hospitals and clinics of Illinois have sent a joint letter to the House of Representatives, condemning HB 2354. This letter is short and to the point:
March 17, 2009
To the lllinois House of Representatives:
On behalf of Catholic health care in the State of lllinois, we collectively write to urge your opposition to House Bill 2354, “The Reproductive Health and Access Act”. Although we object to this proposed legislation in total, and consider its title misleading, our specific objections concern the abortion language and provisions.
HB 2354 represents a radical departure from current Illinois law by forcing health care workers to participate in objectionable procedures like abortion for fear of losing their employment. Furthermore, HB 2354 expands public funding for abortion while prohibiting the state from enacting any regulations on abortion at any stage of pregnancy.
Finally, we do not believe that HB 2354 represents the will, or the best interest, of the people of lllinois. We respectfully urge your opposition to HB 2354. Thank you.
If you or your family rely on Catholic health care or services, please join your health care providers and oppose HB 2354!
It is my hope that Illinois House Bill 2354 entitled: Reproductive Health and Access Act is voted down in its current form as well as any possible variation.
My family as well as I are paying thousands of dollars to the state of Illinois every year and we are now being told that taxes might need to be increased more than 50 percent to pay for the shortfalls as a result of the economy. O.K., I might understand the fact that taxes will go up. However, it is a tough pill to swallow when we are told that we will need to pay for abortion services and that good Christian people will be forced to provide abortion services against their wills.
“All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win the world is for enough good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke 1729 - 1797
Sincerely,
Joe
